Record the serial number - Repeat after me - Record serial #
Register bike with local police and a national registry.
Ok, It's a kids bike and it cost more to register and/or travel to police dept. than it's worth - then still record the serial # and write an adults name on the bottom of the frame with a magic marker (provides immediate proof of ownership when somebody just happens to start leaving the park with it)
Never ride your sister's/brother's bike ( yeah - your bike has a flat and you have to ride with your buddies: what it really tells everyone is that it's a communal bike and everybody's buddy will then start riding it and it ends up 4 blocks away )Plus if I see you - I'm going to call you a sissy and other intentional demeaning things.
NEVER buy a stolen bike or a bike that may be stolen. I know it's such a great deal and you cannot pass it up: well I hope you feel the same way when someone else is buying your stuff that was stolen.
So how do you buy a used bike???
ALWAYS take a picture of the bike and the person who is selling it together ( remember most cell phones are cameras - so don't try that excuse ) and ask for picture I.D. - no excuses - if they don't agree - don't buy!!!!!!
And last but not least and we really should not have to; but
Lock your bike up outside and even inside.
It's really up to each community to change the attitudes of every one that bicycle thievery is not acceptable!
